Ipswich eye new contract offer for former Sheffield Utd and Lincoln City defender

Ipswich Town look set to offer James Wilson an extended deal as reported by the East Anglian Daily Times.

The former Sheffield United defender landed at Portman Road in the summer following his release by Lincoln City. He signed a short-term deal with the Tractor Boys which runs until New Years Day, and after making his debut in the opening day win at Burton, he’s gone on to make seven further appearances across all competitions and earnt the praise of Town boss Paul Lambert with some impressive displays.

Speaking to the EADT Lambert admitted he was impressed with Wilson’s attitude and application since arriving at the club and was looking to extend his deal. He said: ‘He’s done great.’

‘The biggest compliment I can give him is that he came here with no real pre-season or training and was thrown into games on trial, which is hard enough, let alone having no training.’

‘That’s a big testament to him that he’s applied himself. He’s a good lad, and at this moment he’s playing well.’

‘He’s not asked (about a contract) and to be fair to him; he’s a quiet lad. He’s certainly doing himself no harm whatsoever, and it’s certainly something we’ll need to look at.’

The thirty-year-old has been an integral part of an Ipswich backline that has so far conceded just five goals, the fewest in the division. The Tractor Boys have set the early pace in League One, remaining unbeaten after ten games, they currently sit top of the table, two points clear.

They travel to third place Fleetwood Town at the weekend in what is one of the games of the day in the bottom two divisions.

Our View

Wilson somewhat surprisingly failed to establish himself at Lincoln, being used sparingly by the Cowleys, often as injury cover for the right-back position.

The Imps have struggled to adapt to life in League One after a good start, and one of the issues has been keeping clean sheets.

We can’t help feeling given their current predicament together with the way he’s performed at Ipswich, the handling of Wilson and his subsequent release may well have been one of the Cowleys few mistakes during their trophy-laden spell at Sincil Bank before they left for Huddersfield.
