Mansfield Town slumped to their fifth League Two defeat of the season at the weekend after a thirty yard Conor Grant screamer gave Plymouth Argyle all three points with a 1-0 win at Field Mill.
It left the Stags in nineteenth place in the table and saw the team booed off by their fans for the second match in succession. Under-fire boss John Dempster called for his players to stand up and be counted in his post-match comments while midfielder John MacDonald called on the fans to stick with the team in his remarks after the final whistle.
However, judging by the reaction of Stags fans to the result on social media, It might be too late for Dempster. A team that just missed out on automatic promotion last season is now struggling at the wrong end of the table, and many feel it is now time for chairman John Radford to pull the trigger before before it gets any worse. Indeed, many fans think the club could be facing a relegation battle if their fortunes do not improve.
Dempster was appointed in the summer to replace David Flitcroft after Flitcroft was sacked in the wake of Mansfield’s heartbreaking playoff semi-final defeat to Newport County. He was a surprising choice at the time, but after the initial optimism at the club moving away from EFL journeymen and giving youth a chance by promoting from within, many fans feel like the experiment has dramatically failed.
