20-year-old Ipswich Town player Barry Cotter has joined National League South side Chelmsford City on a short-term loan deal, as revealed by the non-league club’s official website.
The Dublin-born right back began his career playing for Limerick in Ireland, but was spotted by Ipswich and brought over to the UK by Mick McCarthy.
He hasn’t played for the first-team since the end of the 2017/18 season, having initially impressed in McCarthy’s final game in charge of the Tractor Boys.
He’s been looked over by Paul Hurst and current boss Paul Lambert and will now look to get some senior football under his belt with Chelmsford who are 14th in the National League South.
Lambert seemingly closed the door on the youngster as far back as March this year, when he told the EADT: “To get in the side you have to get motoring and be really on the button.
“Is he (Cotter) behind Bree? Yes. Is he behind Emmanuel? Yes, absolutely. Behind Spence? Yeah. He’s down there but nothing’s given. You have to keep working hard and when your chance comes you have to impress me and take it.”
Blues fans have reacted to the move with a mixture of surprise and acceptance, with some feeling the youngster isn’t League One quality, others feeling he hasn’t been given a chance.
