Celtic legend one of several contenders for League One job

Southend United chairman Ron Martin has insisted Celtic legend Henrik Larsson is one of several contenders for the Shrimpers vacant managerial position.

Martin has moved to dampen speculation linking the former striker with Southend after Laarson was spotted at Southend’s game with MK Dons at the weekend.

He told the Southend Echo: ‘Having Henrik Larsson join us on Saturday was simply part of the continuing interview process.’

‘I have a number of people to see this week and shall also be talking further with Henrik.’

Martin went on to explain that the club’s due diligence process meant an appointment was unlikely before the weekend and also complimented caretaker boss Gary Waddock who oversaw the Shrimpers first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over MK Dons.

Larsson scored an incredible two hundred and forty-three goals for the Hoops in an honour laden spell between 1997 and 2004. He is revered at Celtic Park as the ‘King of Kings.’

Our View

While the appointment of Larsson would bring masses of publicity and a potential increase in the club’s commercial activity we can’t help feeling in Southend’s current position they need an experienced League One Campaigner.

Larsson’s managerial record in Sweden is not eye-catching and it will be a massive gamble to give him the job.

As my club, Lincoln City found when appointing Larsson’s former strike partner Chris Sutton; a former successful Celtic striker may find it challenging to manage in the lower leagues.
