Southend United’s financial troubles look set to continue with the club being issued yet another winding-up petition as reported by BBC Essex via the BBC Sport Website.
The Shrimpers are in the doldrums on the pitch, having picked up just one point so far this season. They are currently second bottom of the League One table and chairmen Ron Martin is currently looking for a new boss after the awful reign of Kevin Bond ended in Harry Redknapp’s former assistant throwing in the towel and resigning.
However, news of financial difficulties rather than who is set to replace Bond in the dugout may be more of a concern for Southend fans in light of the recent shambolic and soul-destroying events Bury and Bolton supporters have recently had to endure.
They will perhaps take heart from the fact the club always seem to find a solution. This is the second winding-up petition issued this year, but it is also the latest in a long line served on the Essex outfit over the last decade, all of which the club survived.
HM Revenue and Customs have issued the new petition which is due to be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice on 16 October.
Our View
Southend United fans will be concerned that the clock is ticking over he future of their club.
The continuing inability of the Blues to pay its tax bills will one day end in disaster if there is a failure to find a long term financial solution for the football club.
Ron Martin is under pressure to find a new manager, but the club desperately needs investment for the club and the new boss to prosper.
The total restructure of income distribution in English football appears just a distant and impossible dream, but until something changes, we will be writing more and more stories about court cases and financial problems rather than the football.
We expect Southend to be the first of many such stories this season.
