Stevenage FC have sacked manager Dino Maamria bringing an end eighteen months in charge for the Tunisian.
The forty-eight-year-old took the managerial reins in March 2018 and guided Boro to finish tenth last season.
However, they have started this campaign poorly, sitting second from bottom after failing to win any of their opening seven League Two fixtures and Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at Cheltenham proved to be the final straw.
The club has placed former England Women’s coach Mark Sampson in caretaker charge. Sampson settled with the FA in January for wrongful dismissal. He fired was after some high profile allegations of inappropriate behaviour on a previous role with female players amid controversy over alleged comments made to several senior England players.
Newly appointed under-18s manager Alex Revell will assist the thirty-six-year-old who steps up from his position as Boro’s first-team coach.
Maamria first joined Stevenage as a player in 2003, making ninety-seven appearances in two spells before returning to the club to work as an assistant to Graham Westley in 2008. Judging by much of the social media reaction to the news, most fans were disappointed it didn’t work out for the affable Maamria, but many still felt it was the right decision.
It appears he leaves with no ill-will and the best wishes of many supporters which is unusual after a managerial sacking when vitriol and recriminations are usually high on fans agenda.
