‘It’s about whether they think they’ve taken the club as far as they can’ – Former PL manager on Sheff Weds Cowley interest

Former Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has admitted that Danny Cowley has to decide if he’s taken Lincoln City as far as he can when considering the Sheffield Wednesday job.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Holloway claimed that the people of Lincoln should erect a statute of their manager. He’s guided them from the National League to second in League One, winning League Two and the EFL Trophy on the way.

If the Owls are interested, Holloway believes that Danny and brother Nicky have a big decision to make.

“Danny and Nicky Cowley should have statues put up of them in Lincoln for what they’ve done there. If I was a Lincoln fan I’d be gutted if they left, but it’s about whether they think they’ve taken the club as far as they can and whether Sheffield Wednesday can give them that extra bit of impetus in their own careers.

He pointed out that Wednesday have faltered in recent seasons and the desire to catch up to their city rival will be intense.

“Wednesday have a bit of an issue because under Carlos Carvalhal they were rocking but didn’t quite follow through on that momentum and make it to the Premier League, and now their bitter rivals Sheffield United have done it before them.”

He believes that taking on a sleeping giant like Sheffield Wednesday could be exactly what the brothers need to step up.

“Whoever takes over at Wednesday will have to deliver but good luck to them because it’s a wonderful football club. The people of that city are fantastic, they love their football and it would be a magnificent appointment because it shows so much promise and it is a brilliant opportunity for the brothers to take their next step.”

Our View

If Sheffield Wednesday do come in for Danny Cowley then he does have a big decision to make. Plenty of people talk about loyalty, but he has shown it to Lincoln this summer.

He’s turned down the Huddersfield job and was heavily tipped to go to West Brom before they opted for Bilic.

Lincoln are riding the crest of a wave right now and are higher than they’ve been since the early eighties. The question is, does Cowley want to finish the job, or will he be tempted to take the step up?
