‘Try to improve in some areas’ – Mark Robins speaks out ahead of Coventry’s clash with Oxford

Coventry City boss Mark Robins is relishing the chance of facing Oxford United this weekend, although he acknowledges the fixture pileup is a cause for concern, as reported by their official club site.

The Sky Blues are amongst the early front-runners in League One, tied with five sides on 11 points. They’re about to play their eighth game of the season, just as their opponents are.

Despite that, the former Barnsley boss is keen to see if his side can keep up their good momentum.

“We’re looking forward to the game seeing if we can perform at the levels we’ve managed to and try improve in some areas as well to get another result away from home,” said Robins.

“We’re different and they are different from last season so we will look forward to the game and it will be our eighth game this month, which is a lot for us.”

He admitted that his counterpart was perhaps right earlier in the week when he claimed to advance to the next stage of the EFL Cup was essentially a form of punishment for winning.

“You would rather be playing, but I think Karl Robinson said it last week, you get penalised for being successful and I can see where he’s coming from, because the amount of games you play in a season, it puts your squad at risk and makes it difficult, but that’s what you want.”

Coventry were eliminated from the competition away at Premier League side Watford, going down by three goals to nil.

Our View

The fixture schedule is silly at this stage of the season. With the EFL Trophy as well, clubs are playing twice in a week all summer. That’ simply too much.

Coventry have a thin squad, as do Oxford and the pressure must be felt amongst those players. Both sides will be adding before the window closes and with both having played seven times already, there are no advantages to be had by either side.
