Charlton Athletic are set to offer former Sunderland right-back, Adam Matthews, a one-year contract as reported by London News Online.
The former Cardiff City and Celtic defender has been training with the Addicks following his release by Sunderland in the summer.
The report claims they understand the twenty-seven-year-old is set to be the final signing made by Charlton boss Lee Bowyer until the winter transfer window.
Matthews made twenty-eight appearances for the Mackems last season, helping them to the League One Playoffs and the EFL Trophy final.
The Welsh international signed a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light in 2015, joining from Scottish giants Celtic when the Black Cats were still in the Premier League for £2 million. However, his spell in the North East has been blighted by injury, with the full-back making sixty-seven appearances in total in his four years on Wearside.
Matthews has played Champions League football for Celtic and won fourteen caps for Wales having come through the youth system at Cardiff City, but it is fair to say many Sunderland supporters do not rate their former player.
When a Charlton Atletic fan took to social media to ask Black Cat fans what sort of player they were rumoured to be signing, he probably wished he hadn’t judged by this selection of responses to his tweet by plenty of the Sunderland faithful.
Remember the Brazilian Cafu. Nothing like him

Can be good one game, then minging for the next 4, followed by 5 games out injured

He's always injured. And he's distinctly average when fit. I wouldn't get excited.

Don't think many lost sleep when he was released. Very good on his day, but woefully inconsistent. That's when he's actually fit to play.
