Everton finally ended the stubborn resistance of League One Lincoln City with two late goals in a Carabao Cup thriller at Sincil Bank last night.
The Imps took the lead inside a minute when Harry Anderson powered home, but a stunning free-kick from Digne and a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty gave the Toffees the lead with half an hour to play.
The white-hot atmosphere was ramped up a further notch when Lincoln drew level through a stunning Bruno Andrade volley which left England’s Jordan Pickford grasping at thin air.
But hopes of a cup upset were dashed when the hard-working Imps tired in the last ten minutes allowing their illustrious opponents to book their passage to the third round with headers from Iwobi and Richarlison.
Fans soon took to social media to react to the high octane cup tie, and it did no go unnoticed that the Brazillian striker Richarlison celebrated the fourth goal with a Messi-like celebration, although after he removed his shirt, he showed the famous Everton badge to the club’s excited travelling faithful rather than his name.
The view fans took of a multi-million-pound Premier League striker joyously celebrating a goal in such a manner in a second-round League Cup tie at humble Sincil Bank appeared to depend on which club they supported. Liverpool and Lincoln’s fans scoffed while Evertonian’s leapt to his defence.
Here is a selection of responses to the jubilant scenes on Twitter.
Richarlison has really just shushed and then took his shirt off and done the Messi celebration against Lincoln.
Football is finished ffs 😂 #LincolnCity

Small club mentality from Richarlison there, how’s he whipping his shirt off and showing it to the crowd at 4-2… In the 2nd round of the Carabao Cup… Against Lincoln? Hahahahahaha

Divock Origi scored the goal that sealed the Champions League trophy and jogged to the corner flag. Richarlison scored a goal against Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup and did the Messi shirt celebration in front of the Everton supporters. I can’t breathe.
