‘If we spent their money we would have aspirations to be champions’ – Steve Evans’ outlandish claims about Coventry City

Gillingham manager Steve Evans has claimed that ‘if he had the money’ Mark Robins had spent at Coventry City, his side would be top of the table, not the Sky Blues.

As reported by the Kent Messenger, Evans has lashed out following their 1-0 defeat at St Andrew’s against Coventry, with Dominic Hyam’s early goal the only difference between the two sides.

After the game, a bullish Evans was full of bold claims despite not seeing his side earn their first win of the season.

“I was top of the league (in August last season for Peterborough) and got the sack in January. Work that one out<” said the former Leeds boss.

“If I had spent the money that Mark Robins (the Coventry manager) had spent then we would be doing that kind of thing, but we’ve not. We do also have good players.”

Coventry have spent cash on just one player; Matt Godden from Peterborough United for around £750,000.

“If we spent their money we would have aspirations to be champions, not a top six side. Mark has built a good side, bought some good players. The board have backed him and I was with some of them last week, and they are tremendous people.

“The Coventry fans were right behind them but second half they’ve seen their team get out-played, out-thought, out-battled, out everything but they stuck with them.”

Evans, who did spend ‘that type of money’ at Peterborough last season but quickly fell away from the top six, is currently without a win in five as Gillingham boss.

He’s added a number of players to his side, including keeper Jack Bonham, striker Mikael Mandron and former Manchester United winger Matty Willock.

Our View

Perhaps the distaste for Evans comes through in this piece, but he hasn’t changed a bit. He’s still looking for excuses, still playing the ‘poor me’ card and, sadly for Gills fans, still not delivering on the field.

It’s early days and it might change but if Mansfield and Peterborough are anything to go by, it won’t.

We feel for Gills fans, we really do.
