Sunderland face EFL competition in hunt for 22-year-old

Sunderland are one of two sides linked with a move for Aberdeen striker Scott Wright, as reported by the Scottish Sun.

Ipswich Town are also thought to be in the hunt for the 22-year-old, who has been with the Dons since 2008, but only turned professional in 2014.

He’s been capped by Scotland at various youth levels, from Under 17 to Under 21 and last season made 13 SPFL appearances. In total, he’s played 58 times for Aberdeen, scoring just five goals.

Last season he was loaned to Dundee, who finished bottom of the table and were relegated. He bagged three in 13 for the struggling outfit who are now in the Scottish Championship.

Ipswich and Sunderland are both amongst the early leaders in League One, level on 11 points with five other teams at the top of the table. The Black Cats have a healthy collection of strikers, including Charlie Wyke, Will Grigg and Marc McNulty.

Ipswich were amongst the goals yesterday with both Kayden Jackson and James Norwood getting off to good starts. Both scored as they hammered a youthful Bolton side 5-0.

Our View

As soon as I read this I thought ‘one for the future’. There isn’t any evidence of a prolific striker here, no suggestion he’s about to explode onto the scene.

His past record is modest at best and poor at worst. Eight career goals is not a great return, but he’s clearly improving all of the time.

Whether the suggested fee of £500,000 is right is another thing altogether though; if my club paid that for him I’d feel we’d been had.
