‘He contributed nothing’, ‘Dud at Celtic, still a dud’ – These fans lash out as 35-y/o leaves Sunderland

Sunderland have announced that veteran defender Glenn Loovens has left the club by mutual consent.

The former Sheffield Wednesday centre back joined as they dropped out of the Championship, starting as first choice in their side. He quickly dropped out of the squad, suffering an injury-hit campaign in which Tom Flanagan and Jack Baldwin established themselves in the side.

This season he hasn’t had a kick and has been restricted to 13 outings in total.

His departure is surely set to be followed by a new arrival or two, especially with the ‘one in, one out’ policy the club have been operating.

Loovens, who counts Cardiff, Feyenoord and Celtic amongst his former employers, thanked the club for the time he spent with them, saying: “I would like to thank everyone – the players, staff and fans – for the support they’ve shown and the help they’ve given me throughout my time at the club.

“Sunderland is a special club and I would like to wish them all the best for the rest of the season and beyond.”

Those same fans have been reacting to his departure in Twitter in high numbers, as they usually do. A selection of their best responses can be found below.
