Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony is usually good value on Twitter and yesterday was no exception with his announcement on social media that the club had turned down a £4 million deadline day bid for striker Ivan Toney causing quite a stir.
Although MacAnthony didn’t name the player or bidding club in his revelation, the local press were soon putting two and two together and concluding that striker Ivan Toney was the wanted man and the bidding club was likely to be one of Barnsley, Charlton or Middlesbrough who’ve all been linked with the striker this summer.
Serious Statement of intent by my partners @JasonDavidNeale & @rstposh turning £4 million down for a @theposhofficial player on deadline day. Hope our fans happy with that & showing we are serious like never before for a great season. Barry has gone for a lie down in shock 😂

The twenty-three-year-old scored twenty-three goals for Posh last season after moving from Newcastle United twelve months ago for a fee in the region of £500,000. He also scored on the opening day of the season in Peterborough’s disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Fleetwood.
Many Posh fans had their tongues firmly in their cheek when they expressed concern for the well being of the famed wheeler-dealer and Posh director of football Barry Fry. Others agreed with MacAnthony that it was a real statement of intent while doubters pitched in questioning whether Posh had a player worth that sort of money. Rival fans also posted many comments in reaction to the tweet which certainly got fans talking.
Here is a small selection of responses to the latest example of fan engagement from the Peterborough owner.

Should have taken it none of your players worth 4m.

Fry has gone for a lay down only because he's lost his commission from the deal

Absolute rubbish that we've bid 4million for anyone!

Watched your game Saturday. Your front 3 were absolutely garbage. No movement or pressing. Maybe they just had a off day but I would say whoever bid £4million is getting away with not being ripped off. Just my opinion
