Plymouth sign Chelsea defender on loan

Plymouth have signed Chelsea defender Josh Grant on a half-season loan.

The twenty-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at relegated Yeovil Town where he made eight League Two appearances. He impressed in a poor team and also spoke positively about leaving the relative comfort of Stamford Bridge for a spell in the EFL’s basement division.

He’s been with Chelsea since the age of eight and captained many of their youth sides. He picked up the Blues Scholar of the Year award in 2015/16 and he’s also represented England at Under-18 level.

The versatile defender is yet to make a senior appearance for the Premier League giants but he’s been invited to train with the first team on occasion.

Grant’s made four EFL Trophy outings including an outing against Argyle when the Chelsea Under-23s ran out 5-0 victors at Home Park at the beginning of last season.

He is predominately a central defender, but can also operate as a full-back as well as a defensive midfielder.

The young prospect is entering the final year of his contract at Chelsea.

Our View

Could be a decent signing for Argyle.

While he may not arrive with the fanfare that greeted some of manager Ryan Lowe’s other summer signings, Grant impressed many at Yeovil and will bring versatility to the Pilgrims squad.

His progress will be exciting to watch, and Grant should be congratulated for once again going out and learning the game in the EFL.
