Sheffield Wednesday Connor Kirby has agreed to a loan move to Macclesfield Town, as reported by Football Insider.
The 20-year-old made his league debut for the Owls in the 2017/18 season, adding another outing to his tally last time out. he also appeared twice in the EFL Cup, but hasn’t featured since a late cameo against West Brom in October.
It’s believed a number of EFL clubs were after the youngster, but Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield Town have moved to the head of the queue. They narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season and are ranked amongst the favourites for the drop this time out.
Kirby is a Barnsley-born product of the Owls academy who signed his first professional contract in October 2015 at the same time as Matt Penney. He’s a slightly-built central midfielder who would likely bring poise and a passing know-how to the Macclesfield central area.
The Silkmen lost the opening game of this season, going down 1-0 in a spirited display away at Exeter City.
Our View
This is a great chance for the youngster to get regular games. It must be frustrating, having come through with Matt Penney and watching him make a success of first team football.
It’ll be a slog though; Macclesfield have to play relatively direct at times and are tipped for a huge struggle this season.
if they do stay up it’ll be through hard work and attracting a little bit of quality, which is likely what Campbell hopes Kirby will bring.
