Doncaster Rovers have rejected a seven-figure bid for Ben Whiteman from Championship side Hull City as reported by the Doncaster Free Press.
The twenty-three-year-old was recently named team captain for the 2019/20 season by new coach Darren Moore, and the Free Press claims the club have no interest in selling. However, they also suggest Rovers are bracing themselves for a follow-up bid from Hull who are managed by ex-Rovers boss Grant McCann.
The midfielder was a standout performer last season making fifty appearances as Rovers reached the League One playoffs under McCann.
Whiteman arrived at the Keepmoat on an initial loan from Sheffield United in the summer of 2017. His stay was made permanent six months later when he signed a three and a half year deal keeping him at the club until 2021. He has gone on to make a total of ninety-eight outings in the red and white hooped jersey.
The report claims Whiteman impressed McCann during his time as Rovers boss when he suggested the youngster had the potential to reach the Premier League.
The Tigers first enquired about his availability last week according to the Free Press.
Our View
McCann will not win many popularity contests in Doncaster, and this latest development will only increase his notoriety amongst many supporters of his former club.
Whiteman is a talented player and good enough for Championship football, Doncaster will do well to keep him especially if he expresses an ambition to play at a higher level.
With a couple of days left for Hull to make their move, it will be a concerning time for Rovers supporters.
