Richie Wellens admits Swindon Town Championship loan deal is a non-starter

Swindon Town manager Richie Wellens has put paid to any ideas their supporters might be having about a loan move for Wigan’s Callum Lang.

As reported by the Gazette and Herald, Wellens has poured scorn on talk of them making a swoop for the 20-year-old winger, who has recently signed a new deal with the Latics.

His relative youth, coupled with Jamal Lowe’s move to the DW Stadium, has fans thinking they might be in with a shout of tempting him into League One. That’s not something Wellens sees as a viable option for the Robins.

“No chance. He will be in Wigan’s first-team squad,” he said when quizzed about a possible move.

“He is a player I am well aware of and is a good player, but we have got no chance of getting him.

“I think he scored 16 goals last season from the wing, if he goes on loan – which I don’t think he will – he will be going to a higher level.”

Lang spent last season on loan with Swindon’s League Two rivals Oldham Athletic, scoring 16 times in 50 outings, having scored 10 in 31 matches for Morecambe the season before.

Wellens saw his side register a strong start to the new season yesterday, winning 2-0 away at recently-relegated Scunthorpe United.

Lang has got to step up and move to a League One club. He’s been in League Two for a couple of seasons, both times proving to be a real success. If he’s going to kick on, he needs to be testing himself at the next level.

He would make a great signing for someone like Oxford United, or maybe even Bolton. He needs to be in the third tier and, if he bags goals and assists there, Wigan have got a possible first team player on their hands.

At least Wellens knows he’s going to struggle to attract the youngster to the County Ground.
