Middlesbrough have made an approach for Peterborough United star Ivan Toney, as reported by Team Talk.
The 23-year-old scored for Posh yesterday as their season got off to a horrible start, losing 3-1 at home to Fleetwood Town. He started alongside record signing Mo Eisa, pulling a goal back with the score 2-0 to the visitors.
Toney began his career with Northampton Town, coming through their youth ranks before earning a move to Newcastle United. He struggled to nail down a first-team place at St James’ Park, spending time on loan with Wigan, Scunthorpe and Barnsley.
He later signed for Posh, where he hit 23 goals in 55 outings last season. He’s now added one more to that tally but, if Boro get their way, he might not play much more in the blue of Posh.
Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has previously claimed the player is not for sale, but won’t respond to the current news story as he’s on a self-imposed Twitter ban after games on a Saturday and Sunday, breaking it briefly yesterday to tell moaning Peterborough fans they could ‘kiss his ass’.
Our View
This is a deal we could see being proposed, but Peterborough will be in no mood to sell. They’ve spent decent money this summer and will be hoping to keep their best players.
Toney is certainly one of their best, even with the capture of Eisa. He’s scored regularly at this level before and there is little surprise he’s coveted by bigger clubs.
MacAnthony and Posh will hold firm though; they’re amongst the favourites for promotion and should put yesterday’s horror show behind them at Oxford next week.
