Southend United have signed former Premier League defender Liam Ridgewell on a one-year contract.
The thirty-five-year-old was a free agent following his release by Hull City at the end of last season.
The experienced campaigner’s spent much of his career in the games top tier, having turned out for Aston Villa, Birmingham and West Brom before he moved to MLS side Portland Timbers in 2014.
The centre-back made headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2012 when pictures emerged of him wiping his backside with a wad of £20s.
The former England Under-21 international joined Championship side Hull City in January and went on to make seven appearances for the Tigers in the second half of the season.
Judging by the reaction of Hull City fans to the news on social media, Ridgewell did not impress many fans at the KCOM Stadium during his short stay. While many Southend fans were delighted with the signing, Tigers fans warned them not to expect too much from a player who appears to have left his best days behind him. It also appears he runs a rather interesting business on his social media accounts
Here is a selection of their revealing responses to the news on Twitter.
As a Hull City fan I’m really sorry to say he’s truly woeful nowadays. I hope he has a good season for you but I really can’t see it. Was a complete liability for us and to say he’s slow is an understatement. May do better on a smaller pitch though. Hope he does

he’s not. at hull he was horrible. couldn’t mark, couldn’t defend. by the time he’d tried to put the tackle in the attacker was already past him. oh yeah, don’t follow his insta

Just a warning Southend fans, if you follow his social media channels prepare for Liam to try and sell you his bikinis and swimming trunks.
