Bolton Wanderers are running an eye over former Manchester United man James Weir on the eve of the new season, as reported by Alan Nixon.
Midfielder Weir came through the ranks with Manchester United, playing once for them in the Premier League. He switched to Hull City at the start of the 2016/17 season, but only appear a handful of times for the Tigers before being released.
He did enjoy a brief loan spell with Wigan, making four outings, but to date his senior football runs to 12 games.
The 23-year-old is now a free agent and has been with Bolton today as they prepare for their opening match of the season tomorrow at home to Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe Wanderers.
He represented England at Under 18 and Under 19 level whilst on the books of the Red Devils, but that promise has not developed into anything further.
He’s now looking to salvage his career with a team who are looking to salvage their identity. The Trotters are still in the grip of a battle for survival but managed to get their opening game ratified by the FA, unlike their final game of last season which was suspended after a player strike.
Our View
I’m going to go out on a limb here; I think Bolton might just stay up this season. Weir is the sort of player they’ll be looking to attract which their rivals might struggle with; young, ambitious and only willing to drop down the divisions for the right club.
If they sort their issues Bolton are a big draw for players; they’ve got a nice ground and a proud history. Where better for a player seeking redemption to go to than a club looking for exactly the same?
