Carlisle United have signed striker Olufela Olomola from League Two rivals Scunthorpe United on a season-long loan deal.
Olomola began his career at Southampton before a successful loan spell at Yeovil persuaded Scunthorpe United to sign him on a three-year deal last summer. He returned to Huish Park for a second loan stint in the first half of last season, making twenty-one outings for the Glovers and scoring three goals. He returned to Glanford Park in January and made five appearances for the Iron before dropping out of the first-team reckoning in March.
The signing was criticised by many Carlisle fans on social media because despite it being a season-long deal, there is a recall clause in January. It is a situation that brought back bitter memories of last season when impressive loan strikers Ashley Nadesan and Jerry Yates returned to their parent clubs mid-season. Many supporters felt their return was a massive contributing factor in the Cumbrians’ downturn in form from January onwards. Carlisle rose as high as fourth at the turn of the year but limped home to finish eleventh, and many fans feel history might repeat itself with the Olomola signing.
Not many supporters commented on the twenty-one-year-olds ability or that they were signing a striker who can’t get in a rivals side; instead many feared that if he did perform well, he would go back to Scunthorpe in the next transfer window.
