Portsmouth eye possible swoop for 26-goal striker amid Championship interest

Portsmouth are eying a possible swoop for Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis as reported by the Daily Mail.

Marquis has emerged as a target for Portsmouth, but the Mail reports Championship side Charlton Athletic are also in the chase to sign the prolific forward.

The twenty-seven-year-old bagged twenty-six goals last season to help fire Rovers into the League One play-offs and new boss Darren Moore was hoping to lure the marksman to sign a new deal at the Keepmoat. However, the report suggests Rovers are now resigned to losing Marquis who is keen for a move south for family reasons.

Rovers are thought to be looking for a fee of around £1 million for their sought-after striker who’s scored sixty-seven goals in one hundred and fifty-three appearances since joining from Millwall in 2016.

Our View

Marquis would be an eye-catching signing for Pompey, he’s a deadly finisher and proven at League One level.

However with Charlton reportedly sniffing around it may be the forward will want to test himself in the Championship.

Marquis has missed much of Rovers pre-season preparations due to personal reasons, and the club’s been reporting no concrete offers have been received that match their valuation.

Nonetheless, with a year left on his contract, it may be time for Darren Moore to cash in on his prized asset and use the money to strengthen his squad.
