Millwall defender set to sign for Newport County

Newport County AFC are set to sign Millwall defender Danny McNamara as reported by the South Wales Argus.

The right-back played as a trialist in the Exiles 3-0 win over Hungerford Town at the weekend, and the Argus claims he’s agreed to a loan stint at Rodney Parade.

The twenty-year-old gained senior experience last season on loan in the National League with Havant & Waterlooville and Dover Athletic and is highly thought of at the New Den. He’s impressed in Milwall’s Under-23s, captaining the side on occasion, and signed a new one-year deal in May with the option of a further twelve months. McNamara is yet to make a senior outing for Millwall, but he did impress in the National League, especially at Dover Athletic.

The news comes after it was confirmed another trialist would not be staying at Rodney Parade. Former Northampton Town midfielder Sam Foley had spent time with the Exiles over the summer and featured in a friendly win at Weston-super-Mare but now appears to be heading to the SPFL according to the report.

Our View

Newport already have Daniel Leadbitter and Marvel Ekpiteta competing for the right-back position so it could be a struggle for McNamara to get game time.

However, he may get a chance to stake his claim in the EFL Trophy, and a step up to an EFL outfit will help his development and hopefully further his progress at Millwall.

Many fans at the New Den are frustrated at the club’s inability to bring players through to the first-team, and they will be hoping the defender finds his feet in Wales and proves his worth to boss Neil Harris.
