Bolton eye possible swoop for former Burnley man

Bolton are running an eye over defender Daniel Lafferty as they look to build a squad capable of competing in the third tier, as reported by the Bolton News.

With the takeover still going on and a 12-point deduction to look forward too, the Trotters are ill-prepared for the season ahead. Much of the squad has departed with a handful sticking around to help them through the troubled times.

One player they’re eyeing over a possible move in 30-year-old Daniel Lafferty. He’s played Premier League football, albeit one game for Burnley, but has also represented Sheffield United and Rotherham.

He was a runner-up in the Championship with Burnley in 2014 and part of the Blades side that won promotion out of League One a couple of years ago. He only appeared once for Chris Wilder’s side last season before being released.

He could yet former part of a defence that includes David Wheater, the captain has been linked with moves away but featured in a friendly earlier this week alongside Harry Brockbank, Gary O’Neill and Josh Magennis.

Our View

It’s refreshing to see them finally being linked with players; does it mean a takeover is close to completion? It surely must be, the season is literally one week away and at present they’re just not ready to face sides.

Laffert would be a good signing for 75% of the teams in this division. I have a sneaky feeling come May Bolton won’t be in the bottom four. They’ve got a huge pull in terms of ground and history and once the takeover is finalised they’ll be in a good position to start rebuilding.

Last time they earned promotion they were under a transfer embargo; could they at least survive this time under far worse conditions?
