Chelsea midfielder joins Shrewsbury on season-long loan

Shrewsbury Town have signed Luke McCormick on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

The twenty-year-old came through the ranks at Stamford Bridge after joining the club as a six-year-old. He has made five appearances in the EFL trophy for the Blues and his stint in Shropshire will be his first away from West London.

The midfielder has made over twenty appearances in Premier League 2 and is highly thought of at Chelsea. In November 2017, he signed a new contract at the club until the summer of 2020 and recent reports claim the youngster is in advanced negotiations with the Chelsea hierarchy to further extend his stay at the club.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Salop manager Sam Ricketts said: ‘This will be Luke’s first loan, but he has been keen and eager to come here and try to impress.’

‘He wants to play football, and he is a signing we look forward to seeing in training and then in the next couple of games.’

McCormick was recommended to Ricketts by Joe Cole at the Chelsea academy and will add to the Shrews midfield which was looking a little light in numbers due to Injuries.

Our View

Always good to see Premier League youngsters in the EFL gaining experience and he will undoubtedly benefit from a dressing room containing hardened campaigners such as Steve Morison.

McCormick is highly-rated and will no doubt fancy himself to push for a first-team place.

Shrews fans will be just delighted they have cover in midfield before the season starts and will hope Ricketts has uncovered a diamond.
