Former Premier League player on trial with Cambridge United

Former Queens Park Rangers defender Michael Harriman is believed to be on trial with Cambridge United, as reported by Cambridge Live.

The 26-year-old was released by League One side Wycombe at the end of last season and was recently thought to have been on trial at Lincoln City.  He made more than 100 appearances for Gareth Ainsworth’s side after coming through the ranks at Loftus Road.

He is usually deployed as a right back or centre back, but can play in midfield as well. Last season he was usually found around the back four in his 24 League One outings for the Chairboys.

He’s got Republic of Ireland honours up to Under 21 level and counts Gillingham and Luton amongst his former clubs, albeit on loan from QPR. He even made a couple of Premier League appearances whilst at Loftus Road, but didn’t kick on and develop from there.

Cambridge are thought to be in the market for a defender after Jake Carroll left to join Scottish Premiership side Motherwell. Colin Calderwood’s side finished in the bottom four last season and will be hoping for a better campaign this time around.

Our View

Harriman would be a good, solid signing for a League Two side. He’s got plenty of experience at the higher level and is still young enough to offer energy as well as experience.

His versatility is also useful, although often that can be a hindrance as much as a help. After all, without one position to call you own you can be called into action in different areas as cover.

It’s only the player that suffers though, as his flexibility means one squad place fills three or four roles, albeit as a reserve.
