Sunderland look set to cut their losses on one-time Manchester United man Donald Love, with a move to Shrewsbury on the cards as reported by the Sunderland Echo.
24-year-old Love is closing in on a switch to Salop, putting a miserable three years behind him at the Stadium of Light.
He joined when the club were still in the Premier League, in a deal thought to be worth just over £1m. He arrived at the same time as Paddy McNair for a combined fee of £5.5m but saw two relegations in as many seasons.
The right back did not impress at all last season in League One, appearing just four times for the Black Cats under Ross. He started the first four matches of the campaign but was ousted by Bryan Oviedo and wasn’t seen again in any competitions.
Now, with a year left on his contract, he’s being allowed to move to Shrewsbury for free and it seems few will be shedding a tear for him.
Criticism of the defender has been scathing on social media, as you’ll see from a selection of cutting messages below.
And we used to call Gareth hall contender for the worst full back we’ve had

Wise men say,
only fools rush in,
but he can't stop, failing it's Love, again

A good move by the club. We'd probably get no more than 100k for him, that's if someone was willing to take on his wages of 450k pa.
For an awful player who would likely never pull the shirt on again that is logical business, not club desperation.

Another disastrous signing…..our club has an horrendous recent history in the transfer market 😂😂

Can’t say I’m sorry to see this lad go. Absolutely shocking.

Flopped on loan with Wigan in league 1 yet we decided to sign him!

We have better academy lads (and released) on a fraction of the wage. Poor recruitment at 1st team level has been appalling at times.

It's signings like this that really make you question the ability of professional scouts and managers. He was appalling in his one Man Utd game (again us). He was then awful in every single Sunderland game. Why on earth was he ever signed?
