Sheffield United striker joins Bristol Rovers on season-long loan

Bristol Rovers have signed Sheffield United striker Tyler Smith on a season-long loan.

The twenty-year-old enjoyed two loan spells last season, featuring for Barrow in the National League where he netted ten times and for Doncaster Rovers in League One, scoring twice for the South Yorkshire outfit in the second half of the season.

Smith is yet to make a first-team outing for the Blades but was included in their squad for their Championship fixture against West Bromwich Albion in December.

He is highly thought of in Sheffield and has just signed a new two-year contract with the Blades who have sanctioned the move to enable the player to continue his development.

The youngster has travelled with the Rovers’ squad for their pre-season training camp in Ireland as preparations continue for the new campaign.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Gas boss Graham Coughlan said: ‘We are pleased to be able to bring Tyler to the club for the season ahead.’

‘He’s a player that has experience at this level and is highly thought of at his parent club and has proved his ability in previous loan spells.’

‘Tyler will give us more options at the top end of the pitch and will complement well what we already have in the squad.’

Our View

Smith is quick with an eye for goal and could prove to be an excellent signing for the Gas.

He adapted well to the harsh realities of National League football last season and impressed many fans at Doncaster with his displays in League One.

Smith is young, hungry, ambitious and highly rated by Blades boss Chris Wilder.

Rovers could well see plenty of goals from the young forward next season.
