Fleetwood and Mansfield keen on versatile midfielder

Fleetwood Town and Mansfield Town are both interested in recently released Portsmouth midfielder Dion Donohue as reported by the Portsmouth News.

Donohue offers versatility being able to operate at left-back as well as central midfield and was released by Pompey after an injury-hit 2018/19 campaign limited him to just fourteen appearances.

The former Everton youth player arrived at Fratton Park in 2017 for an undisclosed fee from Chesterfield where he made sixty-five outings, and the report claims Donohue is keen for a return north to be closer to his family.

The report also claims that Donohue’s outstanding performance in Portsmouth’s 1-0 victory over Fleetwood in October piqued the interest of boss Joey Barton and that he is very much on the radar of the Cod Army.

Mansfield are also keen on the twenty-five-year-old as new boss John Dempster looks to build a squad that can finally win promotion from League Two according to the News.

Our View

Donohue made an encouraging start to life in Portsmouth, but injuries ultimately hampered his progress.

Indeed, manager Kenny Jackett left the decision not to take up the option on his contract to the last minute in the hope that the player he held in high regard could prove his fitness, but it was not meant to be and two groin injuries at the end of the season put paid to his Pompey career.

When fit and on his game, he is a good player with a sweet left foot and would add quality to both Fleetwood and Mansfield.

The Portsmouth News suggest the player is close to agreeing on a deal with a new club and it will be interesting to see where the Welshman ends up.
