Scunthorpe United are on the verge of making their fourth summer signing as reported by Grimsby Telegraph.
The report claims Shrewsbury Town winger Alex Gilliead is set to put pen to paper at Glanford Park as manager Paul Hurst looks to his former club to strengthen his squad.
Gilliead joined Shrewsbury from boyhood club Newcastle United on a two-year deal last summer and scored three goals in thirty-five appearances last season. The twenty-three-year-old has fallen out of favour with Salop boss Sam Ricketts who is looking to employ a system of play without specialist wide players.
The report claims Scunthorpe boss Hurst is looking for cover for the injured Ryan Colclough who is expected to miss the start of the season as he continues his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury.
Gilliead has not travelled to Portugal on the Shrews pre-season trip and is finalising his move to the League Two side according to the Shropshire Star.
Our View
Gilliead showed glimpses of his talent at Shrewsbury but was often inconsistent and frustrating.
Many Shrews fans also criticised his strength on the ball and considered him lightweight.
Nonetheless, League Two might be his current level, and Scunthorpe may well be set to sign a player who could fulfil some of his obvious potential in the right environment.
He could shine at Glanford Park giving Paul Hurst some much-needed creativity as he looks to rebuild his squad after last seasons relegation.
