Burton Albion have signed Manchester United goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara on a season-long loan.
The twenty-three-year-old has been at Old Trafford since the age of eight and spent last season on loan at Macclesfield Town where he played a crucial role in helping Sol Campbell’s side defy the odds and preserve their EFL status.
He made forty-two outings for the Silkmen and his outstanding performances saw him win four individual accolades at the club’s end of season awards including the Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.
Manchester-born O’Hara represents the Republic of Ireland at international level having played twelve times for the Under-21s. He has also been involved in two provisional senior squads.
In an announcement on the club’s official website, United said the move to Staffordshire had been sanctioned to aid their Academy products development.
Speaking on the club’s official website, a delighted Brewers boss Nigel Clough said of his latest signing: ‘You look at the scale of Macclesfield’s achievement last year, and clearly there must have been some people doing extremely well for them, and he was certainly one of them. For them to stay up was incredible, and he played a major role in that.’
‘He will come in feeling confident and with the pedigree of being at Manchester United for a number of years, and he fits the bill.’
‘This is the next stage for him, and we want to help him get into the full Republic of Ireland squad as well.’
Our View
Having seen O’Hara twice last season, I can confidently confirm that Burton Albion have made an excellent signing.
He was magnificent for Macclesfield last season and was far too good for League Two.
Brewers fans are in for a treat next season watching this outstanding young ‘keeper continue his development at the Pirelli Stadium.
