Ipswich Town linked with versatile 23-year-old defender

Ipswich Town are amongst a host of clubs linked with a move for versatile former Burnley and Oldham Athletic defender Cameron Dummigan as reported by East Anglian Dailly Times via Teamtalk.com

The report claims Ipswich are in the race for the versatile full-back who can play in any position across the back four and that Lincoln City, Forest Green, Millwall and Luton Town are all monitoring the situation.

According to Sky Sports, Grimsby Town are also interested in the twenty-three-year-old and recently had a bid for Dummigan rejected. Sky also claims two unnamed League One clubs are in discussions with Dundalk regarding the sale of the former Northern Ireland Under-21 international captain.

Dummigan signed for the Northern Irish club in February on a long-term contract after a three-year injury hampered spell with Oldham.

He made eighty-five appearances in total for the Latics who he joined permanently in 2016 on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Burnley following three successful loan spells at Boundary Park in 2015/16.

He rose through the ranks at Turf Moor and made the first-team bench on four occasions but did not make a senior outing in Sean Dyche’s team.

He was voted Oldham’s Young Player of the Year in 2017 and is set to feature for Dundalk in the Champions League on Wednesday when they begin their qualifying campaign against FC Riga.

Our View

Dummigan was rated highly at Burnley and started well at Oldham before injuries took their toll.

He has talent but needs to stay fit and make more appearances,

We are surprised at the interest in the player given that he has hardly set the world alight in Dundalk.

If the report is accurate, in our opinion, on current form, it would be a massive risk for any of the clubs involved to pay a fee for Dummigan.

However, if he recaptures his early career promise that tempted Oldham to pay a fee for his services in 2016, it might be a gamble worth taking.
