Coventry City’s young defender Jordon Thompson has joined National League side Boreham Wood on a season-long loan, as confirmed by their official club site.
The 20-year-old joins up with a side that narrowly avoided relegation last season, just a year after finishing in the play-offs, losing in the final to Tranmere.
The 20-year-old Thompson has already gained experience of the fifth tier, spending a one-month loan spell at Barrow in 2017.
Sky Blues manager Mark Robins is keen to see the former academy player gain valuable first-team experience out on loan this season.
“Jordon Thompson is going out on loan for the season, which is good for him and that’s why he wasn’t involved on Saturday because he would normally,” said Robins.
“I want him to go out and get games and there will be others as well.”
There is an option to recall the centre back in January, if it suits Robins and Coventry City.
Thomspon has started four matches for the Sky Blues, three of those in the EFL Trophy, whilst he’s also appeared three times from the bench.
Our View
Thompson is a young player who needs vital first team experience in order to grow and develop. It’s clear that’s not coming from the Sky Blues, so a loan spell makes sense.
He’s going into a tough division, the National League is unforgiving with lots of good sides and robust centre forwards.
If he makes 30 starts this season, he’ll be returning to Robins a better player, that’s for sure.
