AFC Wimbledon are looking at Bohemians defender Andy Lyons as they look to strengthen for the new season, as reported by the Irish Independent.
Wally Downes’ side narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season having staged a truly great escape. At one point, they were ten points adrift of safety, but a wonderful run saw the claw their way out of the bottom four and remain in the third-tier for another season.
They’re now looking to strengthen for the coming season and have identified Bohemians defender Lyons as a prospect for the future.
The 18-year-old has made nine Irish Premier League appearances this season and is a rapidly rising star. He has just completed his Leaving Certificate and has been included in the squad for Ireland’s Under 19 squad that will travel to Armenia for the Euro finals.
The Under 19s qualified for the tournament with a 100% record, with victories against Bosnia, Faroe Islands and the Netherlands. They’ll now face Azerbaijan, Russia and Romania in the Elite stage of the competition which starts next Sunday.
Lyons is a right back of a more conventional nature, rather than wing back or attacking full back.
Our View
Lyons is certainly one for the future, he’s got some senior football under his belt for Bohemians and is well-regarded at his age group.
That young Irish side looks to have bags of promise and he’s a big part of their success.
It’s a big jump from the Irish Premier League to League One and he might not be a first team player immediately but certainly, a move to the Football League would be a boost for his career.
