Oldham Athletic target 24-year-old Championship striker

Oldham Athletic are keen to add Nottingham Foret’s striker Zach Clough to their ranks as they plot a way out of the basement division.

The Latics want the former £2.5m man to spearhead their attack in the basement division, as reported by journalist Alan Nixon.

The 24-year-old’s collpase has been almost as shocking as his sudden rise to prominence under former Forest boss Mark Warburton.

Clough bagged 22 goals in 64 outings for Bolton, with nine in 25 convincing QPR boss Warburton, then at the City Ground, to pay out the huge fee for him.

He started well bagging four in eight matches including an opener in an East Midlands derby. The next season he managed just one in 26 outings, leading to a surprise loan move to League One Rochdale.

He started just four league matches for them, without scoring, and is now back at the City Ground.

It’s believed Oldham, under the guidance of former Monaco manager Laurent Banide, will struggle to get a deal done for the Denton-born attacker.

Our View

Football is a cruel mistress. Clough’s star shone brightly at Bolton, but a change of manager and a drop in form has seen him fall from a multi-million pound buy to a Rochdale reserve.

He’s not going to play at Forest, but they’ll want some return for their outlay which will rule out all but the most affluent of League One clubs. It’s catch 22, isn’t it? Those who can afford him can do better and those that might play him don’t have the funds.
