Morecambe boss Jim Bentley has been talking up the benefits of having his side back in for pre-season training this week.
Speaking to the Morecambe Visitor, he outlined his ambitions for the next couple of days, as well as talking about new signings joining the club.
Morecambe are always tipped to be amongst the bottom two but, year after year, they manage to stay in the Football League. That leads to a team spirit developing which is second to none, something that has been evident to Bentley on the first day back.
“It’s always a nice day, we’ve been away for quite a while,” said the boss. “The players have come back and straight away you can see them all interacting and chatting about their families and what they’ve been doing over the summer.
“It’s always a positive day from my point of view. I’ve had a meeting with them for half an hour with regards to standards and what’s expected of them. I’ll go more into target setting and ambitions for the season further down the line.”
Bentley revealed he’s hoping to add more players to the squad, with Cole Stockton their big summer signing so far.
“We still need to bring in maybe another four players to the squad, something like that, maybe more depending on what we’ve got available.”
Morecambe face a trip to Grimsby Town on the opening day of the season.
Our View
We love Morecambe at the Real EFL. They epitomise exactly what we love; hard work, grit and real people. They’re not drowning in expectation, they have no delusions of grandeur and they get where they need to be every year by hard work.
Last season, they might have done better had they not suffered from injuries throughout the campaign. They ended up with Jordan Cranston, a full back, playing in an advanced role.
On a limited budget players have to be prepared to be flexible at the Globe Arena, but the spirit they have means there are no egos, only players committed to the cause.
