‘Not a massive miss’ – These Portsmouth fans respond as 28-year-old departs

Kenny Jackett has revealed that defender Nathan Thompson will not be returning to Fratton Park next season as reported by Andrew Moon of the BBC.

The 28-year-old is set to see his contract expire next month and he won’t be heading back to the south coast to help them fight for promotion once more.
Pompey missed out on the play-off final by virtue of a 1-0 aggregate defeat against Sunderland across two tetchy and nervous semi-final matches. They’ve strengthened at the back the last couple of days, adding Norwich City man Sean Raggett to their ranks, but they’ll now be hunting a new right back.

Thompson first made the move to Portsmouth from Swindon Town back in the summer of 2017 and made 79 times appearances. 31 of those came last season as Pompey looked likely to achieve promotion, only to fall away as the season wore on.

News that Thompson won’t be returning hasn’t prompted a wave of anger, rather a general malaise. It seems these supporters don’t think he was quite as integral to their success as it might have seemed.

Please note we made amendments to this article after a keyboard warrior called the player arrogant, on social media, but then didn’t like it being highlighted. Happy to clear that up.
