‘Good riddance I say’ – These Plymouth fans are not exactly broken-hearted as striker departs

Rotherham United have signed Plymouth Argyle striker Freddie Ladapo for an undisclosed club record fee on a three-year deal.

The twenty-six-year-old finished the season as the Pilgrims top scorer last season with eighteen goals in forty-five League One appearances in a disappointing campaign for Argyle which saw them relegated to League Two.

It was a single standout season for the striker following his move from Southend United last summer. He thrived at Home Park, benefitting from the creative skills of Graham Carey and Ruben Lameiras after struggling for goals at Roots Hall.

Ladapo began his career at Colchester and enjoyed permanent spells at Kidderminster and Margate before a surprise switch to Crystal Palace. He only appeared once for the Eagles, against Manchester United, before switching to Southend.

In amongst those permanent spells he had nine different loans spells at clubs as diverse as Thurrock, Shrewsbury, Bishop’s Stortford and Oldham.

While it was undoubtedly a fantastic season in 2018/19 for Ladapo, his departure brought a muted reaction from Argyle fans with many thinking the Pilgrims had got the better of a deal considered to be worth in the region of £500,000.
