Highly-rated defender Frankie Kent has agreed to join Peterborough United on a three-year deal.
The twenty-three-year-old has signed for an undisclosed fee from Colchester United and is manager Darren Ferguson’s eighth signing of a busy summer.
Kent came through the youth-team at Colchester and went on to make one hundred and forty-one senior appearances for the U’s after his first-team breakthrough on the final day of 2013/14 season. He enjoyed an impressive 2018/19 campaign for John McGreal’s side, finishing the season as skipper and winning the club’s Player of the Year award.
Speaking about the signing on the club’s official website Ferguson said: ‘Frankie has played a lot of games for his age, he has been a captain there, he is a leader for his age, has loads of potential, is a good size and we see him as a right-sided centre back. He has good balance, is good with the ball at his feet and when I met him, I could see how eager he was to join and that was great because there were a lot of clubs in for him.’
‘It is a big one for us. We have done our recruitment very well in this close season, and we are looking forward to working with them when they come back for pre-season on Monday. I am really pleased with how things have gone so far.’
Kent had one year left on his contract at Colchester and was grateful to the club for giving him his chance but was now looking to the future and a successful season with Posh at a higher level of football. He said: ‘This is the next step and I am looking forward to hopefully a promotion push with Peterborough.’
Our View
Fantastic signing for Peterborough, Kent is already a top defender and will only get better playing week in week out at a higher level with better players.
Posh are really making a statement that they intend to mount a serious challenge for promotion next season, and in Kent, they have signed real quality.
Colchester fans will be extremely disappointed and will be wondering what direction the club is taking for next season, especially with Sammie Szmodics set to follow Kent out the door this summer.
Worrying times for U’s fans
