Portsmouth have opened talks to sign Sheffield United striker Ched Evans, as reported by Football Insider
The Wales international enjoyed a successful season-long loan at Fleetwood Town in 2018/19 scoring seventeen league goals and prompting Joey Barton to confirm recently he would love to make a move permanent, but finances were a limitation at Highbury.
Amidst interest from Oxford United, Football Insider is claiming their sources at Pompey have revealed Kenny Jackett has made a move to take Evans to Fratton Park.
The striker has a season left on his Sheffield United contract and looks unlikely to play for the Blades again following Chris Wilder’s side’s promotion to the Premier League, but the report claims Evans is looking for at least a two-year-deal to tempt him away from Bramall Lane permanently.
According to Football Insider, their source is telling them Pompey are hopeful of signing the forward as they look to strengthen their attacking options for an assault on League One promotion next season.
Our View
Evans would probably not win many popularity contests amongst some supporters, but with recent high profile legal issues now well behind him, he is looking to rebuild his career.
He is a proven goalscorer in League One and would make an excellent signing for Pompey providing them with the goals to mount a serious challenge for League One promotion next season.
It is still likely to be a controversial signing for some Pompey fans even though Evans was found not guilty of any wrongdoing after a retrial.
It will be interesting to see the fan reaction if this report is accurate and Evans ends up on the South Coast.
