Bradford City in ambitious move for former Premier League striker

Bradford City are trying to get a deal done for former Everton player James Vaughan, as reported by Alan Nixon.

The Bantams are facing up to life in League Two after relegation last season, but are working hard to put together a squad capable of promotion. Vaughan, who has never played in the basement division, is top of that ambitious shopping list.

He began his career with Everton, earning England honours up to Under 21 level and bagging nine goals in 60 appearances. He didn’t manage to live up to his early potential and saw loan spells with Derby, Leicester and Crystal Palace before joining Norwich City.

He bagged 31 goals in 86 Championship appearances for Bradford’s Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, but his later career hasn’t been spectacular. A switch to Birmingham saw him leave goalless and he despite 24 goals for Bury, he struggled to impress at Sunderland, Wigan and again at Portsmouth last season.

He played 11 times for Pompey as failed to earn promotion without scoring a goal and is now a free agent after leaving parent club Wigan.

Our View

Vaughan hasn’t impressed in his last few roles, but he should be a behemoth in League Two. He did well with Bury despite their relegation and he’s an athletic and mobile striker.

It would be a big coup if the Bantams landed Vaughan, there is little doubt about that. he’s got a good pedigree and needs to move to a club who will afford him regular starts at a comfortable level.

This could give him some success as he enters the latter stages of a career that once promised so much.
