Bolton Wanderers braced for exit as 32-year-old attracts Championship interest

Bolton Wanderers are bracing themselves for the exit of keeper Ben Alnwick amidst Championship interest.

The 32-year-old played 28 times for the Trotters last season but, according to Football Insider, he could be available on a free as the players were not paid on several occasions last season.

That’s piqued the interest of a number of Championship sides, including recently-relegated Huddersfield and promoted Charlton Atheltic.

Alnwick began his career in the north east with Sunderland, later moving to Spurs. He earned England recognition from Under 16 level right through to Under 21, but wasn’t able to turn that into senior international football.

He finally found a home at Peterborough United after several loan spells and played two full seasons for them before switching to Bolton. he helped them to second place in League One in 2017, as well as appearing in two seasons Championship football.

His 2018/19 campaign was blighted by injury, but that hasn’t stopped three clubs interest. As well as the two mentioned, Wigan are also thought to want to add him to their squad, following loan player Christian Walton’s return to Brighton.

Our View

Alnwick is a good keeper, too good for League One. That early international promise had many thinking we’d see him in a major tournament for his country, but his career faltered after the move to Spurs; a sure warning to all exciting young players.

Since he’s found first team football, he’s shone. He would have played more games last season were it not for the layoff and he’d be perfect for someone like Wigan or Charlton; reliable, experienced and great for the younger players too.
