Doncaster have bid striker Liam Mandeville farewell after he sealed a move to National League side Chesterfield following his release.
The Lincoln-born 22-year-old has been with Rovers for four years, but despite making almost 50 appearances has struggled to impose himself on the first team set up.
Since arriving at the Keepmoat as an 18-year old he has bagged 15 goals, 10 of which came during the 2016/17 season. He had a short-term loan with Northern Premier League side Whitby Town back in 2015, followed up by spells League Two with Colchester United and Morecambe.
He played 46 times during his loan spell at Morecambe, but only netted four times as he was used out wide as well as through the centre. He did register nine assists as they avoided relegation.
The news was revealed on the Spireites own website, with a two-year deal on the cards for the forward. They fell into the National League in the summer of 2018 and struggled to establish themselves last season under Martin Allen.
John Sheridan left Carlisle to take over the ailing club and they’re hoping to launch a promotion assault next season.
On the capture of Mandeville, Assistant-manager Glynn Snodin said: “Liam could have stayed in the Football League, so credit to him for dropping down to the National League to join us. He creates and scores goals and we think we can get the best out of him.”
Our View
This should be a big signing for Chesterfield. he’s young, has proven he can score and has lots of Football League experience as well.
He’s not the finished product, not by a long way, but the National League is a great place for him to prove his worth. You only have to look at the likes of Macaulay Bonne, he got League One experience, dropped into the fifth tier and is now worth a huge amount after a successful two-year spell.
