‘New goalie??? Hang on?’ – Tweet by former Argyle keeper sparks hope of a return amongst these Plymouth fans

Former Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Remi Matthews was quick to send the Pilgrim’s new manager Ryan Lowe his best wishes via Twitter, and the social media post sparked hope of a return for the keeper to the South-West amongst some Plymouth fans.

Matthews enjoyed a loan spell with the Pilgrims in 2017/18 during which Lowe, then still turning out as a striker for Bury, was red-carded for a bad challenge on the keeper.

The controversial incident, which was described by reports at the time as a ‘knee-high kick,’ doesn’t seem to have had any lasting effect on Matthews who appeared to be referring to the incident when he said in his tweet, ‘ps, no hard feelings.’

A fan was quick to post a video of the tackle which prompted the reply, ‘Think he got a bit of the ball to be fair.’

Matthews is currently at troubled Bolton Wanderers and is one of the few Trotters players still under contract, but the financial turmoil at the club has led to speculation on his future, with Hull City, Charlton Athletic, and Ipswich Town all recently linked with making a move for the former Norwich City trainee.

With Championship and League One clubs chasing the twenty-five-year-old, it seems unlikely he will make a return to Home Park, but that didn’t stop some Argyle fans hoping the tweet was a come and get me plea from the keeper.

Plymouth have not been linked to Matthews but It sounds like it would certainly be a popular move amongst many in the Green Army if Lowe could beat off interest from higher ranked clubs and make the keeper one of his first signings for the Pilgrims.

Here is a selection of their responses to Matthews’ post.
