Rumours that Gillingham striker Tom Eaves was set to join Charlton Athletic’s pre-season training camp with a view to making the switch to South London have been dismissed as ‘wide of the mark’ by South London Press.
Reports yesterday suggested that Eaves would join the South London club for pre-season so the Addicks coaching staff could have a close look at his talents before signing the 22-goal striker. However, the local press has dismissed this idea.
The in-demand striker is still very much of interest to the Addicks but they face stiff competition from a host of Championship and League One clubs according to the report.
Eaves is out of contract with Gillingham at the end of the month and his failure to sign a contract extension forced new manager Steve Evans to recently admit to Kent Online that he feared he would lose the club’s star striker commenting that ‘Sometimes players want to challenge themselves at higher levels or bigger clubs and football should always be about progression.’
Addicks boss Lee Bowyer is known to be an admirer of Eaves, and the report claims he is keen to bolster his attacking resources after returning to the second tier.
Eaves is believed to be taking some time out to consider his options and will not be rushed into making a decision.
Charlton are very interested in Eaves of that there seems little doubt but they were always going to have a fight on their hands to win his signature.
They may well still get their man, but it seems like Charlton fans will have to wait a little longer for positive news on this one.
Eaves is sure to be in-demand after a stellar season for Gillingham, and this one could run and run all summer.
