Tranmere Rovers sealed a place in League One next season with a last-gasp victory over Newport County at Wembley.
An engrossing game had failed to produce a goal, but did produce a whopping 45 efforts at goal, 11 of which were on target. The balance of power swung in the dying embers of normal time, when Mark O’Brien got his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
That hurt the Exiles who, just a moment earlier, felt they had a legitimate penalty shout turned down when Manny Monthe appeared to foul Jamille Matt.
Matt was a constant thorn in Tranmere’s side and only a stunning save from Scott Daves kept the scores level before extra time.
Tranmere certainly dominated the final 30 minutes and with just seconds before a penalty shoot-out, Connor Jennings bagged his 13th of the season to send Mickey Mellon’s men to a second promotion in as many season.
They’ll now join Bury, MK Dons and champions Lincoln City in League One next season.
Reaction has obviously been largely positive, with Tranmere worthy promotion candidates after a great first season back in the Football League.
?????? back to back is very impressive.
