Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has revealed he intends to appoint Steve Evans as the club’s new manager, seemingly going against popular fan opinion.
Evans was sacked by Peterborough after less than a season in charge, following the same length of time as Mansfield manager. He’s also managed Leeds, Crawley, Rotherham and Boston United and is never far away from controversy.
The Gills sacked manager Steve Lovell after he kept them up last season, but progress had been steady prompting the dismissal. They’ve taken their time to appoint Evans, but he’s been a front-runner for the role ever since Lovell left.
The Gills fans haven’t reacted well on social media, Evans’s antics on the touchline have not endeared him to their supporters and they’ve let the chairman know that in no uncertain terms on Twitter.
Scally might think this is a good move for the club and something likely to bring success, but it will do little for the unity between the fans and the team as they approach the new season.
I’m afraid you’ve lost me until after Evans has gone. I draw the line at appointing people with his past. After 30 odd years this is a new low for me. Sad sad day.

I can’t say I am overjoyed at the thought of this vile man managing my club and hope that his appointment is short-lived & I now hope Mr Scally’s time as owner/chairman is limited too. #COYG

Would gleefully take administration and losing our first 20 games to dismiss him

Well I'm glad I waited before buying a season ticket because I will never cheer on a team managed by that vile entity

Literally not seen one other fan say it’s a good appointment

I am not happy with the appointment however I am willing to give him a chance as our manager.

The only people in Gilingham that will be happy about this is the owners of the All you can Eat Restaurant.
