Scunthorpe United were predictably relegated from League One yesterday after losing 3-2 at Plymouth Argyle.
A win wouldn’t have been enough to keep them up, Southend beat Sunderland meaning all three teams that started in the bottom four with a chance of survival, were relegated.
There’s often recriminations and disgust when a team goes down, but yesterday Scunthorpe took their desperation to a whole new level. Most fans have seen the incident between Leeds and Aston Villa, where hesitation and uncertainty over an injured player led to a goal for Mateusz Klich.
In that instance, perhaps confusion could be blamed. Leeds acted admirably in the aftermath, allowing Aston Villa to walk the ball into the net.
Yesterday, amidst a game of high tension and with Plymouth 2-1 up, Matt Macey went down injured in his goalmouth holding the ball. He rolled it out so he could get treatment, only to see Josh Morris pick the ball up and put it in the back of the net. Cue jubilation for Scunthorpe fans and seething anger for the home side.
The referee couldn’t do a thing about it, it was a legal goal to all intents and purposes. Scunthorpe were in no mood to let their opponents score either, simply playing on as normal.
Justice was done, Plymouth won the game 3-2 but both sides were relegated. One side perhaps retained a bit of integrity in their relegation, but the other have well and truly sullied their name in the eyes of these neutrals.
That is possibly the lowest I have ever seen a team stoop. Unbelievable.

I thought the Leeds one was bad. Disgusting from your player and manager to not let Plymouth get a goal back. Deserve to go down to league 2

Wow… I was impartial and hoping you stayed up… not now… shocking lack of sportsmanship.

I’d be embarrassed celebrating that tbh. Absolutely shocking

Want to give a true account here @SUFCOfficial twitter team? “Morris intercepts the ball from injured goalkeeper trying to roll the ball out of play”. Lowest of the low, absolutely disgusting.

I have never seen such poor sportsmanship in my life. The manager should hang his head in shame!

Shocking sportsmanship. Should be ashamed of themselves.

Can’t believe you’ve celebrated that to be fair. Shocking sense of bad sportsmanship.
