Bristol Rovers midfielder Kyle Bennett is keen on leaving the club after enjoying a successful loan spell with Ritchie Wellens’ Swindon Town.
The midfielder has been in fine form since joining on loan in the winter window and has ousted Michael Doughty from the side in recent weeks.
Bennett is a winger, but has popped up behind the strikers recently and has weighed in with goals and assists. Ritchie Wellens told press recently his loan players were better than those contracted to the squad, with Bennett becoming a key general for the 39-year-old boss.
It’s not thought 28-year-old Bennett, who knows the manager form their time together at Doncaster, is keen on a permanent switch to the County Ground.
He spoke to the Swindon Advertiser of his desire to remain with the club on a permanent basis.
“A long-term stay interests me. It’s not down to me right now, but it’s definitely something I would be keen on,” he said.
“I get on with the manager very well. I played with him and have known him for a number of years. It’s a matter of if we can come to an arrangement to do it.”
He paid tribute to Wellens, who might not have made himself the most popular man in Swindon with his recent justified attack on some of his playing squad.
“I know Richie as a person, and he’s not being personal to people – but it’s his job on the line. He’ll make decisions that he feels are right. That’s not for anyone else to comment on.”
Our View
Bennett has done a good job since coming in and clearly the manager trusts him as well.
He’s a slick, cultured player who can be incredibly effective in League Two. Wellens is forming the nucleus of a good side at the County Ground, but it’s going to take a lot of work in the summer to separate the wheat from the chaff.
